This is a very basic museum consisting with two rooms in separate buildings. They display a chronology of the city and universal events, and objects to show the city history, such as clothing or luggage.
The City Museum is located in the Historic District of Buenos Aires and covers the entire neighborhoods of Montserrat and San Telmo . This area, unique for the quality of its public spaces and the symbolic value of its buildings, concentrates the memory of Buenos Aires, which after being a village between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, experienced a formidable prosperity and growth. These spaces of roots and cultural identity of the porteños, account for those years. Opened in 1968, the Museum occupies four buildings of heritage value. The House of Altos de Elorriaga (1808), the House of Ezcurra (consolidated in 1830), the House of the Altos de la Estrella (1894) and the House of the Cherubs (circa 1895); the first two, in restoration. Under the direction of the Museum are the Sunday Fair of San Pedro Telmo, in Plaza Dorrego ( Humberto I and Defensa ), and the Arts Fair, in the San Francisco Square ( Alsina and Defensa ). And it organizes temporary fairs, such as the Old Book, April, Metals and Clothing Fairs. The Museum keeps alive the urban memory, sheltering in its collections various characteristic objects, often rescued from the remains of demolitions. From chamber pots and phonographs, to tiles, toys, documents, curiosities and photographs, all of them gathered thanks to the generous contribution of the residents of Buenos Aires. His collections and temporary exhibitions reconstruct the uses and customs of the City in a way that is both entertaining and erudite.
Interesting museums in San Telmo district.
