Without doubt one of the best view you can get in Patagonia, and what a surprise to discover it during a border crossing from Villa O'higgins to El Chaltén ! You can camp there for free, but you should not expect any service there - although the guys working at the border are really nice. Sunrise with the Fitz Roy reflecting on the lake is gorgeous. To get there from Villa O'Higgins (Chile), you'll first have to take an expensive but mandatory ferry to the Chilean emigration office, and then walk 22km on an easy road (4/5h). Possibility of talking with people there to get a truck/4wd taking you - or your bags - the first 17km of that section. You'll arrive at that place which is the Argentina immigration and the North shore of the Lago del Desierto. To get to El Chaltén, walk 12km (5-6H is realistic cause it is a small path and includes some small river crossing, so leave in the morning rather than attempting it at the end of the day) or just take the expensive ferry (40 USD equivalent). From the South of the lake, don't take the crazily expensive 25 USD bus to El Chaltén because it is meant for tour operator consisting of wealthy tourists. Hitchike instead (free) of find a mini-van going back to El Chaltén in the afternoon (no more than 10 USD). There are too many alternatives to take the big bus - which is likely to be full by the way.

This is a wild camping place, camping is free and there are no services. Views are spectacular on good weather. Can get windy with only partial shelter in the woods.

Spectacular views when the weather is clear, wild camping site, no facilities, but this is no problem. The Gendarmeria is close and the pier, if you want to cross by ferry, is super close.

Excelente lugar, es el ingreso al trekking hacia el Glaciar Huemul. En la hostería de la entrada funciona un restaurante con excelente atención, buena ambientación y exquisitos platos. Ni hablar de la chocolatada después del trekking! Muy recomendable
