The construction of the Sarmiento Palace was carried out between 1886 and 1888 according to a project by the Argentine architect Carlos Altgelt, who had the collaboration of his cousin Hans Altgelt. Located on Calle Pizzurno, between Paraguay and Marcelo T. de Alvear, the headquarters of the Ministry of Education displays an eclectic combination of French style with reminiscences of Versailles - as evidenced by the outstanding mansards that characterize this building and the padding on its facades - with several Germanic touches, despite the predominance of the taste for French monumental architecture that was in vogue at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in Argentina, the slight Teutonic influence, with a certain severity in the lines, is the product of the builder's education in the country of his ancestors. Even today the figures representing Sciences and Arts and the Peace Force can be seen in the mezzanine windows. On the balconies on the upper floor, you can see allegories of the Río de la Plata and the Andes Mountains. According to the original layout of the building, the three floors of the central body of the same were occupied by the museum and the school library, while the left wing was dedicated to the school. Its surroundings, which are also historical places, include the Jardin de los Maestros square (which is located in front of the ministry) and the Petronila Rodríguez square, located nearby. All these lands, along with the plot on which the main construction was built, were owned by the Spanish merchant Juan Antonio Rodríguez. In front of the Palace, on its main facade is the Plaza Rodríguez Peña.
